Crown of War and Shadow by J.R. Ward

★★★★☆

If you’re a fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, you’ll find a lot to love in Crown of War and Shadow, even if the setting is brand new. It’s got that high-stakes fantasy feel, but the heart of the story is really about the characters.

The story follows Sorrel, an outcast who finds herself on a high-stakes journey across the Badlands. I loved that she wasn’t a “whiny” heroine; she starts out terrified—rightfully so—but her growth into a woman who refuses to be stopped was so rewarding to watch. Merc is her broody, mysterious guide, and their chemistry is intense. Also, keep an eye out for Thane, the head of the Southern Outpost. Even though he’s a “bad guy,” he’s got a top hat and a moral code that made him one of my favorite parts of the book. The world moves fast, but if you like a story about finding strength in the shadows, you’ll want to check this one out when it hits the shelves in February!
